Sam Thompson

Sam Thompson is a composer based in London and originally from Preston, Lancashire. In 2022 he released his single Pavane via Deutsche Grammophon as well as scoring Plebs: Soldiers of Rome for ITV, co-scoring the second series of Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy with Amelia Warner and scoring AXA’s Birders campaign which won Silver at Cannes Lion. He also composed additional music for Netflix‘s Sex Education, as well as for Amazon’s All or Nothing: Arsenal and feature films Young Woman and the Sea and Mr Malcolm’s List.

Sam’s latest scores include 72 Films‘ & Prime Video‘s 4-part docu-series We Are Newcastle United, the BBC Three comedy by Mawaan Rizwan Juice, the upcoming 8 part Bond-inspired series from Amazon Studios & 72 Films, 007’s Road To A Million, featuring Succession‘s Brian Cox as host, and the upcoming documentary 3-part documentary-series JFK: One Day in America for 72 Films & National Geographic, which is available from 5th November via Disney+.

Previous work includes the feature documentary Mayor by award-winning director David Osit as well as the TV series Dark Worlds, Home Free and It Pays to Behave. He frequently collaborates with composer Amelia Warner, writing additional music as well arranging and co-producing her last two feature film scores. Sam has also composed music for Sky, Universal, Sony, EMI and BMG along with numerous short films.

As orchestrator and conductor Sam has worked on TV shows, films and video games such as Sex Education, Frozen Planet II, Living, I Used to be Famous, Total War: Warhammer, Nightmare Alley, Greatest Days, Reptile, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Our Girl, Guardians of the Galaxy, Evelyn, How To Build A Girl, Spirit Untamed and Us. Sam has also provided additional orchestrations for Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ scores for Wind River, Kings and Mars.

Alongside his work in film and TV, Sam has written and conducted arrangements for artists such as The xx, Betsy, Ellie Goulding, Biffy Clyro, Lady Leshurr, JW Ridley, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Jenny Plant, Freddie Mercer, The Tomicks and The People The Poet, as well as conducting The Heritage Orchestra and Anna Calvi at the Burberry Fashion Show.

His 2021 EP As Now the Light Retreats is available on all streaming platforms and he is currently writing his debut album for release in 2024.

Based at Air Studios in London, Sam is a composer, arranger/orchestrator and conductor. In 2019 he scored the TV series Home Free and It Pays to Behave for Channel 4, whilst more recently he has been scoring the feature documentary Mayor by award-winning director David Osit. Sam has also composed music for Sky, Sony, EMI and BMG along with numerous short films. He frequently collaborates with artist and composer Peter Gregson, composing additional music for projects such as Boundless (Playstation 4) and Ashely Avis’ feature film Adolescence.

Sam has worked extensively as orchestrator for BAFTA winning composers Ben Foster and Nick Foster on TV shows such as Thunderbirds Are Go!Our GirlHappy Valley, The A-List and The Good Karma Hospital. He has orchestrated and conducted scores for Oli Julian, Patrick Jonsson and Walter Mair including Netflix’s Sex Education, Caitlin Moran’s How to Build a Girl and Orlando Von Einsiedel’s Evelyn. Sam has also provided additional orchestrations for Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ scores for Wind River, Kings and Mars.

Sam’s score for short film After We Have Left Our Homes won the Best Music award at the Toronto Sci Fi Feedback Film Festival. The soundtrack is available on all digital platforms.
