Jim Fowler started out playing jazz and writing music (and sometimes words) for theatre before joining PlayStation to work on competitive singing game SingStar. After working on over 100 SingStar releases, he spent several years as in-house composer and orchestrator for Sony’s Worldwide Studios.
In 2019 Jim scored Blood & Truth for PlayStation VR – an orchestral/grime high energy action score. He’s written music for numerous games, including several releases of LittleBigPlanet, Wonderbook: Book of Spells and Book of Potions (part of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World), Walking with Dinosaurs, Creature in the Well and an all Big Band score for Diggs Nightcrawler. His work has been nominated for various industry awards, with Book of Spells winning the Develop Award for Audio Achievement. His most recent work was for the BAFTA-nominated game Sackboy.
As well as composing Jim has orchestrated games as diverse as Bloodborne and Knack 2 and regularly works with Jessica Curry as orchestrator, including on the BAFTA winning Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. In 2018 Jim orchestrated and arranged PlayStation in Concert, which was performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. Outside of games, he has orchestrated for the likes of Thunderbirds Are Go for Ben Foster and Nick Foster.
Recent work includes the BAFTA-nominated game Sackboy: A Big Adventure; Little Orpheus with Jessica Curry, for which their score was nominated for Best Original Video Game Score at the 2021 Ivor Novello Awards, and Total War: Warhammer III in 2022.
In 2022, Jim composed the score for documentary special Making the Wish: Disney’s Newest Cruise Ship (National Geographic), available to view now via Disney+.
